On Sunday afternoon, May 1, I was at my Grandma's house and got ready to change Emmett's diaper. When I pulled back his diaper I saw a golf ball sized lump in his groin. We went to kid's care and of course the lump was gone. So the doctor scheduled an ultra sound for Monday. When Dave came home from drill, he gave Emmett a blessing and we went home. About nine that night, the lump appeared again. Only this time it was accompanied with screaming. So we called my mom to watch Livie and headed to the ER. They did an ultra sound, and there it was, an inguinal hernia. The ER doc referred us to PCMC. We got in on Tuesday and since it was deemed urgent not emergency, they sent us home and said they would schedule us, but would need a pre-authorization from the insurance. Uh, oh. Here was the problem. With Tricare, you have to first enroll in DEERS before you can enroll in Tricare. In order to enroll in DEERS, you need a birth certificate and SSN. Awesome. I didn't have either one yet. So after fighting all Tuesday and Wednesday, we were able to get our pre-authorization. Surgery was scheduled for May 6. All the while I was constantly having to push his little hernia back in each time it popped out. Poor kid was in so much pain he wasn't eating or sleeping.
This is my sick baby in the pre-op room
They have the tiniest hospital pants for him and they still drowned him.
Daddy with Emmett. Once we were through in the pre-op room, they took us to the OR waiting room. There were about 15 kids waiting to have surgery. My heart just broke seeing what those brave kids had to go through. Emmett was the youngest patient. The anesthesiologist took us through some doors then took Emmett and said he would be in good hands. David and I cried as we watched our baby being taken down a long hallway to the OR. The waiting room was terrible! Luckily I had to pump, so time went by so much faster. Finally our name was called! A nurse took me back to recovery and there he was looking right at me. The nurse said he was the perfect patient. He woke and didn't cry or need any oxygen.
This is his little incision. He has healed so well and the scar is barely visible. We are so grateful for the amazing doctors and nurses that took care of us and made our little Emmett better!
